You will have to replace it if it is cracked or corrupt before you proceed with installation of the unit. Now install the metal brackets use to support the AC at a level which is set for it. These brackets need to be nailed at the center.
You will then need to install the panels into the rails. This can be hard because they are designed to not fall out. There may be Velcro strips you can install on the inside of the head rail to secure the windows. This should also let you slip in the panels. The valance returns attach to joiners but you may have to trip excess fabric. Woven wooden valances come with an aluminium L joint in the corner that inserts into the panel. The last step is to install the cords which move the panels along the track.
